It is not all that uncommon that a debate may take place between snake owners on what to feed their pets. Some argue for live rodents other look to frozen mice or rats. Who is to say which is best? Apparently I am.

Now there are more then a couple things to consider when choosing the best snake food. I am talking about more than taste, but really about the health and safety of you reptile. There has been more than one occasion where the prey has turned into the predator and caused a snake some serious injuries.

Why does the debate over reptile food rage on? I think you are probably looking at two different camps, or trains of thought. First is the group that feels snakes or reptiles, and by that I mean any lizard that may eat rodents and not bugs, should behave as if they are in their natural environment.

While this sounds like a good idea, we can't realistically produce a natural environment for our reptiles and snakes. At best, we can only produce a semi natural state for them. After all they are living in a cage in the suburbs or cities. If the snake was hunting for it's prey in a natural habitat they would be far away from humans if possible.

Not the Natural snake food camp would have you believe that the snake can only feel like they are truly hunting prey like mice or rats if the rodents they are fed are alive. This make sense on the surface, but not so much when you dig a little deeper. Frozen Mice are a legitimate food source for you snake.

The hunting instinct does not only happen when a live mouse is put in front of them. It also happens when a pre-killed prey is used as food. Some times a snake doesn't know the difference between pinkie mice in either state.

What matters is what the snake is really accustomed to. Have they be fed only live rodents during the time you are their owner? Do you really think that you can't teach them to take pre-killed prey?

What about the potential health benefits of using pre-killed mice or rats vs. the live? Where do you get your supply? Is it a breeder that uses the up most care in disease and virus prevention? This should be a question that you should ask no matter what state you choose to get your feeders from.

I'm not sure about the live ones, however I do know that you can get suppliers of frozen pinkie mice to guarantee that their rodents are disease and parasite free. If your other company gets so called free range mice, can they certify the same thing? Most likely not.

It is not that hard to get your snake to start eating this different type of meal source. I mean, really, these people make it sound like it will be traumatic for their snake. If you take a little time to get them used to it, they won't know the differences after a couple of meals. I mean a mouse is a mouse for crying out loud.

Use the proper method for thawing out your frozen mice and give it a try. If they don't seem interested at first, use some of the tricks and tips I'll teach you here to get them going. I assure you, making the switch to buy frozen mice is worth the effort.

Feeder Mice - Size and Description

Feeder Mice are found all over the world but are believed to have their origins in Asia. Due to the high growth rate of their populations, and the advent of modern travel they have managed to migrate to Europe and finally America. Once every 425 days it is said that their population grows to one million or plague proportions. This makes them a large available source of Snake food, and spectacular for breeding purposes.

Feeder Mice also go by the name of weaners, jumpers, or hoppers. There are several different types of depending on life stage or when they are harvested for feeding.

Pinkie Mice or "pinkies"
Feeder mice are one type of frozen mice that are born sightless and hairless, at this stage their skin is a pink color, giving them their name. They weight approximately 1 gram at this point, and can easily fit in the palm of your hand. These are good for feeding smaller snakes and reptiles.

Fuzzy Mice
The next stage in the life cycle is the fuzzy stage. This is because they develop a fine set a hairs as they begin to mature. They weigh approximately 6 grams at this point.

Feeder Mice
The final stage is when the mouse makes it to adulthood and they get the name feeder mice. At this point they weigh approximately 20 - 30 grams. These are good for larger snakes, like a boa.

The lifespan of feeder mice is approximately 2- 3 years. However with breeding specifically for feeding to snakes and other animals, they are harvested throughout the life cycle as needed.

Frozen Feeder Mice - Criteria For Finding A Supplier

We've already covered quite a few topics in this area about snake food, but I thought it would be helpful to provide and overall guide to criteria when deciding on a frozen pinkie mice supplier. Now there are a lot of different things that you can use to compare the different companies. The things I've chose to concentrate on are feeder mice breeding, packaging and shipping, bulk ordering and pricing, product variety, and customer service.

Breeding and Harvesting Feeder Mice
You want only the highest quality frozen mice for your pet snake. The colonies should be raised and bread with the finest of care. When they are raised with an attention to detail they will yield a crop of feeder mice that will be healthy and nutritious both before and after the harvesting. This will carry on to you having a healthy and happy reptile.

What does that really mean. For starters, they should be fed with top quality feed. They need a healthy diet in order to return the nutrients to your snake. Next they should be disease and parasite free. A good company will provide you with a guarantee to this fact.

Packaging and Shipping
Your snake food needs to be flash frozen and vacuum sealed for freshness, ensuring a quality product that is delivered to your door. This also helps to make them easier to thaw come feeding time. You should also look for a supplier that provides Free or Discount shipping when you purchase your frozen mice. This will get them to your door at a discount rate which will cut down on your overall costs. A lot of companies will offer this, if they don't be sure to ask, all they can do is say no.

Bulk Ordering Your Frozen Rodents
Why order in bulk? It keeps you from having to make frequent trips to your local pet store. But more importantly you can get some great prices as well. Look at the great prices on the quantities that are available to you. The larger your order the better your price. Buying snake food in bulk will provide you with a great benefit.

We'll help you find the best deal and supplier for your needs. No need to go looking all over the web when we do the searching for you. In a future article we'll provide a listing of the top companies online.

Variety of Frozen Mice
There are many different types of frozen rodents available, make sure your supplier has a wide variety for you to choose from. Pinkies, Fuzzy Mice, and Rats are some of the most common types to buy when you are looking to feed a snake. Variety isn't much of an issue as most suppliers will carry a full range of items. If you only have one snake, not that big of a deal, but if you have a collection of small to large breeds, you will want a one stop shop. A red tail boa is not going to eat the same as a corn snake.

Customer Service
Having a helpful, friendly, and well trained staff to help you with any questions on your orders is very important. A live voice on the phone should greet you whenever you need some assistance. Since this is mainly about online feeder mice suppliers, you will want a company that is responsive to your email. If you send them out a couple of questions before you order and it takes a week for them to respond, you probably want to stay away. You can bet you will get this kind of service or worse once they have your money.

A well established and long running firm for frozen rodents is an indicator of a great business. You can trust a name that has been in the business for a long time and has a good reputation. Keeping the reputation in the industry is a very motivating factor. You may want to take a look at Rodentpro or Bigappleherp as two places to start.

Hope this list gives you some good criteria to go on to help you buy frozen mice that you need.

Frozen Mice or Live - What To Feed Your Snake

A very common question among snake owners, new and old is "What should I feed my snake? Live or Frozen Mice?" A lot of people think that their snake will only eat live food. However making a conversion to frozen rodents is not that difficult, and may be the best thing for your pet.

Using a frozen feeder such as pinky mice, may be a safer alternative to using a live food source. Believe it or not, just because you bought the rodent for use as food for your snake, doesn't mean that it agrees with your decision. Most mice or rats would prefer to go on leading happy healthy lives, eating cheese and hanging out with their rodent friends. So it should not be a shocker to learn that these live animals will put up a fight when trying to be eaten by your pet corn snake for it's next meal. These critters may bite or claw your snake, causing injury as they being devoured.

That's just one scenario. The other is if you have a larger snake that feeds on a larger animal like rats. There are stories of rats that were left alone in a cage with an uninterested snake, and the rats being a tough animal, and voracious eaters, have actually started to eat the snake! If this happens it can cause horrendous injuries to your favorite family member. Some stories have it that rats have chewed all the way to the back bone in some instances. That won't happen with frozen mice!

If you want to avoid this type of potential issue, using frozen rats or feeders is a much better and safer option. Once your snake is used to eating the frozen rodent, you will find it is also a much simpler solution.

You can buy frozen mice online to save money and buy in bulk. The other option is to head down to your local pet store and purchase a couple weeks supply at a bit of a higher cost. If you have room in the refrigerator, buying in bulk is much nicer. Plus, if you find the right supplier, you can get a guarantee that the mice or rats were harvested fresh, and are disease free. Make sure you get a supplier that individually wraps the feeders before freezing as it makes for an easier preparation at feeding time. With quick shipping and dry ice, your food stock will arrive fresh at your door.

There is probably a much longer debate as to whether should should use live or frozen mice, but hopefully some of the major concerns were covered here.

Where To Buy Frozen Pinkie Mice Online

If you are trying to find a place online to buy your frozen pinkie mice it can be a daunting task. If you are a snake or reptile owner you want to make sure that the food you feed your pet the best quality, disease, and parasite free meal possible. You need a supplier that takes the highest set of quality control in mind when breeding the food for your pet snake or lizard.

Once you do a web search on frozen pinkie mice you will be greeted with all sorts of different choices. Some of the companies will have flashy websites, others will look like they were made in the early nineties by a high school kid. As the old saying goes, don't judge a book by it's color. What you need to do is judge the company by the quality of the product. The breeder needs to have high standards when it raises it's breeders or the food you may feed your bearded dragon may cause more harm than good.

It is similar to your own diet. For proper nutrition you need the best quality nutrients that are healthy in order for you to stay fit. This is no different than when you feed your pet corn snake or gecko. They need the best quality food possible to stay healthy and strong. There is a big difference between feeding your reptile a top quality frozen mice and a low quality one.

Now, to talk more about buying your feeder rodents online. You can find a lot of top quality suppliers if you know where and what to look for. If you are looking to buy in bulk and get a discount, there is a company for you. Why do you want to buy your frozen feeders online? Is it for convenience? Is it to get a better price? What ever the reason, I'm sure you can find the answer to your problem.

I prefer to purchase online in order to avoid running to the local pet store every few weeks to stock up. If I buy in bulk online, my supply can last for several months. The only drawback is that I lose freezer space for my own food. I know some people get queasy when they think of sharing the refrigerator with a much of frozen pinky mice, however this has never been a problem for me. I buy my mice from a supplier that seals each individual mouse in it's own container, which also makes it easier to thaw and feed to my pet snake.

One nice thing about buying your pinkie mice online is that you can usually have an opportunity to use paypal. I find this a nice and safe option when purchasing from a new company. It gives you the confidence that your credit card information is secure and you have a way to get your money back if the company turns out to not be reputable. The first trick is obviously to find a snake food provider that is reputable and honest so you don't have to worry about this in the first place, however it does give you a nice feeling to know that you are protected anyway.

Shipping your product is also not a big issue. Depending on where the supplier is located you can get some fairly reasonable rates. Some companies may even provide free shipping on your order. Quick shipping is important, however most are packed in dry ice so that you don't have to worry if your order is delayed for a day or so. Your product will stay as fresh as when it left the breeder.

So if you are wondering where to buy frozen pinkie mice online, I will cover that more in the next article as well as having some useful tips and tricks for you.

How To Buy Snake Food Online

New reptile owners, especially snake owners ask me how to buy food online. I first want to know why they are interested in buying their snake food on line. Are they looking for cheap, are they looking for convenience, are they looking to place bulk orders? And the big question is are they talking about frozen mice not live ones?

All of these are good reasons to go online for your snake food. If you find a reputable provider, they will be able to fulfill all those needs for you. When I go online to buy my Frozen Pinkie mice, I have a few things that I am looking for in a provider. Are your feeders harvested fresh? Do you guarantee their freshness? Are they parasite and disease free?

I also want to know how they are packaged. Some suppliers will bundle all the rodents together and freeze them into a solid block of ice. Every time you want to feed your snake, you'll be trying to chip one off the block. Which is kind of gross, and the animal doesn't come out in the best shape. I prefer my Frozen Pinkie Mice to be individually packaged before they are frozen. This allows you to take just the amount you need, and thawing them out is a snap. Plus your pet will enjoy his or her meal if it hasn't been gathered with an ice pick.

Another benefit to buying your snake food online, is the bulk purchase. If you get a supplier who individually packages them like I recommended above, that supply of Frozen pinkies will last you months. It will save you making a trip to the pet store every couple of weeks to stock up.

I'm not necessarily saying that buying from a local store is a bad option it is not. Some times the convince factor is being able to run down to your local market when ever you need supplies. And if you don't have a dedicated freezer, you will have your snakes food sharing the same area as your food. Some people will find this very unappetizing. And if you are buying in bulk quantities, it may take up a lot of space that you can't use for your own needs.

You also need to figure cost into the equation. You can usually get a better deal by buying in large quantities. But you must also factor in the shipping costs and make sure the total price is still a better bargain than getting a two weeks supply at your local pet store. Depending on where in the country they are located, your frozen pinkies could be making a long trip.

I hope some of these tips helped answer some of your questions about buying snake food online. I'll try and continue to give you the best information I have so that you can make an informed decision.

Do Snakes Watch TV?

So I read an article today about a woman who was rudely awakened by the feeling of something wiggling between her legs. Ok, Ok, enough giggling - it's not what you think. When she looked down, a 3 foot long black snake had curled up on her lap for a good nights sleep. I can tell you that would freak me out! It is one thing to have a pet snake, but to find a strange one in bed with you is enough to make a strong man start freaking out.

It was reported that she threw the snake across the room, grabbed her child and ran outside. She got some help from the neighbors who went inside to remove the snake and killed it. I don't think there was any need to kill the snake, but most people are dead scared of them and I do understand their reaction.

There was no other description of the snake other than it was three foot long and black. My guess is she would have been happier if it was just a foot long and black...but I'm getting off topic.

Here's the real kicker. The next day she finds another one, this time crawling around her son's toy box! I hope he wasn't mistaking the little one for a frozen pinkie mice. What would that say about the looks of the kid. I've heard of stories of small kids being mistaken for snake food, but those stories usually take place in the Amazon and involve an Anaconda...

Once again the neighbors came to her rescue and captured and killed the snake. Still unnecessary but you do what you have to do I guess.

Anyway, the lady has so scared she won't return to her apartment. I don't know where she's staying now, but the apartment complex was nice enough to find her a new spot in a few weeks. Hope her snake friends don't have her forwarding address.

It kind of reminds me of the episode of the Exterminators on A&E. A couple calls the team to snake proof their house because they found and killed a large snake in their bedroom. While he was doing the walk through of the house he poked his head into the closet, only to find a second snake staring right back at him. Knocked him on his but.

What I like about this guy is that he relocates animals instead of killing them. He put the snake in a box and dropped him out in the swap or bayou, what ever it is that they call it down there in Louisiana.

I guess that proves snakes don't watch TV because if they had seen that episode, they would have realized making your home in someone's house is not a good idea, and can be hazardous to your health.

You can check out the full story here Woman wakes up with snake.

Where to Get Snake Food

Do you have a pet snake or reptile that you are looking to find a frozen feeder supplier?
